Energy Medicine: What is it and how does it work?

We have some newer people in the community so I want to say welcome to you, , if you’re new here! And if you’ve been around for a long time – I’m so glad you’re with us and that you let me be a part of your crazy busy inbox.

If you’ve ever taken a class with me, or one of the monthly free trainings (or really anything I do!) you’ve noticed I always sprinkle in a little energy work to get us all in balance.
Energy medicine is a funny thing to talk about so I thought I’d take a moment on this Saturday morning to explain it more fully.

I’m the first to acknowledge there’s a hint of “woo woo” associated with the word energy. But I know from the questions I get that even those who don’t have an ounce of “woo” in them are curious about what energy is and what it means to their health.

To make things more confusing, there are a lot of teachers, body workers and yes, wackos, who congregate under the umbrella of “energy healer.” It’s easy for that to happen because everything is energy.

I just quoted Einstein and he said it best: “Everything  is energy and that’s all there is to it.”

Your body is a network of vibrating cells and molecules. Using atomic force microscopes, researchers are able to measure vibrations on the nanoscale – much smaller than 1/1000th the diameter of a single human hair.

These vibrations (also called frequencies) generate electromagnetic energy waves. Scientists have found that vibrations and the electromagnetic energy associated with them cause changes in your cells, which then affects how your body functions.

They’ve also identified how our body uses these vibrations to repair injuries, resolve mental illness, reduce anxiety, regulate blood pressure, cure insomnia, heal cancer and way, WAY more.

For people who don’t study this for a living, a real problem is if you google “energy medicine” you’re more likely to get an article from something like “Great Cosmic Mothers Unite” than PubMed (a respected reference of medical journals) – even though there are plenty of PubMed papers out there for you to read.

Although the Western way of healthcare is a pharmaceutical model, there is more and more scientific evidence appearing every day to support the idea of using your own energy to stay healthy.

What this “new” research shows is that the body knows how to heal itself because your cells communicate to one another through vibration.

You are constantly healing every moment of every day. The thing is… in order for you to heal, you need to be in balance. The fancy word for this is homeostasis.

We’re constantly taking ourselves out of balance. What we eat, being sedentary, air and water pollution, pesticides, our phones and computers, toxins, our negative thoughts and a lot more disrupt our homeostasis. Then our magical body works to return us to balance.

Until it becomes just too much. Then we get sick, have pain, develop disease or cancer, etc.

In a nutshell, the specific kind of energy medicine I’m trained in is “scientific” in the sense that I teach people how to work with the energy/vibration/frequencies that researchers know exists.

Of course, the ancient healers knew this way before these researchers could prove it in a way that our Western minds will accept.

Taking ancient wisdom and overlapping it with modern science is my absolute favorite thing and it’s the playground I love to be in.

There’s now generally accepted consensus that the ancient Chinese were right. We do have rivers of energy flowing through us and there are certain points on these rivers (called meridians) that are especially powerful.

It’s also scientifically proven that working with these points, be it via acupuncture, acupressure, tapping on them and other methods works to heal you.

There are specific, general routines you can do every day to keep your energy in a steady balanced flow.

There are also targeted ones you can do for your specific imbalances which can show up as pain, insomnia, mental health issues, hormone problems, disease or anything else your body sends you signals about to tell you that things are out of homeostasis.

Best of all, you learn about your unique body in a way you’ve never experienced before!

I love doing energy medicine on myself and doing it to others on a massage table – but most of all I love teaching YOU how to do it on yourself. Which is why I add a little bit to every single class and course I teach.
