The top 7 foods for women over 50

Many of you know how changing my diet radically changed my health and is a big part of my journey that led me to where I am today: writing you this email.

In my personal transformation, there’s a key switch that was flipped, but it happened over time. Not so much like suddenly turning a light switch on, but more like a sunrise – slow, steady and beautiful.

What happened was that my relationship with food changed from eating whatever I was in the mood for at the time to connecting what I ate with how I felt: my mood, emotions, self confidence, energy and quality of life.

In other words, food stopped being only about short term cravings and started being about fueling my life force to accomplish what I want to do.

I learned that when I was intentional about what I ate to make myself thrive, the more I did thrive and it completely changed how I showed up in the world.

While all of this may sound esoteric, there is a real science behind it and it’s called chemistry.

Chemistry completely changed how I look at food.

For perspective, the pharmaceutical industry uses chemistry. Researchers have learned the chemistry of the human body and they’ve developed drugs to change our chemistry for a certain purpose.

In chemical reactions, molecules interact with one another. As a result, some molecules disappear and others are formed. Chemical reactions can be very complicated, but in simple words they are molecules bouncing into each other. The bouncing triggers them to share/discard/release atoms, forming new molecules.

Ok, buckle in for this part: The food that we put in our body is creating chemical reactions just like a drug!

If you’ve ever heard the saying “food is medicine” – that’s what it means. Food, drinks, supplements, drugs, they are all creating chemical reactions within us. (It’s also why your doctor wants to know if you are taking any drugs or supplements – supplements are drugs.)

We are a part of nature. We ARE nature. Mother earth provides the foods we need to flourish. We can eat her chemically perfect foods and achieve incredible health, we just need to learn what they are and experience the vitality we feel when we eat them.

When we eat her food, we don’t experience the side effects of manufactured pharmaceutical drugs.

For example, something as simple as hibiscus tea protects us with antioxidants, fights inflammation, lowers blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, promotes weight loss, fights bacteria and supports liver health.

There’s even a recent study that 2 cups of strong hibiscus tea daily (5 tea bags over 2 cups) lowers cholesterol levels as much as a top cholesterol drug – with no side effects.

When choosing what foods you eat, there is a hierarchy. Some foods are better than others and you want to squeeze them into your meals at some point every day (just like you take medicine every day.)
