Traits of the modern matriarch

What does it mean to you to be a matriarch?

It’s a role I’ve been thinking about lately, that of the modern matriarch. How women have so much power, even if we don’t see it all yet.  Our power can be used first to fulfill ourselves but at the same time, also forge a path to make it easier for other women to be leaders too.

Even though I never had children, I’m fully devoted to growing myself into a modern matriarch.

It’s eye-opening how many women around me who, even though they are educated, haven’t yet fully discovered that they have so many untapped strengths and potential.

But they want to.

They’ve always been someone’s girlfriend, wife, mother, grandmother, etc. and now they want to find out who they are as a sovereign being.

They’re ready to grow what they have inside to energize and lift themselves and their communities: physically, mentally and spiritually.

Matriarchy is traditionally described as a system or form of government ruled by a woman or by women; a form of social organization in which descent and relationships are documented through the female lineage and/or the female head of a clan or tribal line.

I see the modern matriarchy as a group of way-showers, light-holders and role-models for those around them.

What does a modern matriarch do?

  • She creates just by being who she is.
  • She invests in herself.
  • She brings abundance to everyone in her community.
  • She follows her intuition.
  • She does research.
  • She surrounds herself with other modern matriarchs for support, education, sisterhood and hope.

Finally, she manages money.

When women are involved with and in charge of the money, here’s what happens:

  • Development speeds up
  • It helps overcome poverty
  • Inequality is reduced
  • Children’s nutrition, health, and school attendance improves
  • More money is invested in families and communities

I didn’t make that up. It’s proven by World Bank Group, Harvard and other business school studies.

The modern matriarch takes care of those around her.

In order to do that, she surrounds herself with other matriarchs for fierce leadership, support, love and protection.

She doesn’t let insecurity, jealousy or fear get in her way.

She is full of self and selflessness at the same time.

And she creates opportunities for all to grow and thrive.

I write this now because our communities need us and we need each other. It’s not the time to shrink back.

Each of us is being called to courageously rise up and model the changes we want reflected back to us.
