Even though I’m vegan, in this case I support milk.

There’s a crazy story from last May that’s keeps popping up every now and then. Whenever I read it I’m reminded that some people think it’s inappropriate to not drink alcohol at traditional events that have booze, but this tale is extra fun because there’s a bizarre twist with milk.

Here’s the scene: There are three sisters. The middle one got sober 4 months before the oldest sister’s wedding. The youngest sister (too young to drink, only 15) was very supportive of her now sober older (middle) sister and packed a special bag of non-alcoholic drinks for her to have at the wedding.

(It IS interesting that there’s an underage family member who was so nervous about the lack of non-alcoholic drinks available that she needed to pack her own bag to bring with her to the wedding. But a lot of this situation is perplexing.)

At the reception, the sober sister searched out the bag of drinks and dug around until she found a half gallon of milk in there and poured herself a cup.

“I drink milk with pretty much every meal,” she wrote when she told her side of the story. “I know it’s a little weird for an adult, but what can I say? I like it.”

She continued…

“I poured myself milk when everyone else was drinking alcohol…I guess I was feeling nervous and a little tense being in a group where most people were drinking heavily for the first time since I’ve gotten sober…”

“So I kept fidgeting and nervously drinking from my cup. Honestly a lot like how I’d compulsively drink alcohol in the past.”

“Before I knew it, my uncle was like ‘damn you just drank all that milk?!?'”

“I guess it became a running joke among everyone at the wedding, like people just started talking about it.”

You’d think it would be over that night, but no…

“The day after the wedding, my sister confronted me saying that she didn’t appreciate the ‘stunt’ I pulled. I was confused and she said that she heard I drank a gallon of milk,”

“I said it was a half gallon but she didn’t find that funny and was convinced I was doing it as a joke.”

Her parents were annoyed too! Both the bride and the parents thought she was attempting to disrupt the wedding.

I guess milk is an even more problematic beverage choice than I realized.

There’s a whole topic thread on Reddit about this situation with, as you can imagine, a bazillion comments. This is my favorite:

“I literally can’t understand the reaction of your sister and your parents. Maybe sarcasm is your friend here? ‘Yes it is true. You got me. I planned out all the ways I could ruin your wedding and determined that drinking some milk with dinner would be the most exciting and dramatic.’”

This story is such an entertaining cross section of bridezilla and alcohol culture and the apparently controversial nature of cow’s milk.

(There’s another fun news story out there called: Woman left horrified as attractive date orders glass of milk in a restaurant – and people can’t agree if she’s right to be put off or not.)

Are any of you reading this dating? If so, will you try the above and report back what happens?

What do you think? Is dairy milk on its way out for good? Was the sober sister out of line? Do you drink milk?

Email me and let me know… what is going on with milk?

PS and side note: Dairy is addictive.

Ya’ll know I’m vegan and don’t consume milk but I can see why this woman wanted it in a stressful situation. Milk has casomorphin which is an opioid. (The word opioid means it resembles opium.) Milk has this opioid for the survival of mammal species. The baby keeps coming back for more. If you’ve ever breastfed or seen breastfeeding, the momma and the baby (of any species) stare at each other with a druggy-like love. It’s why many adults are addicted to cheese, which has high concentrations of casomorphin.
